Geographical situationThe island of Re is the second largest island of the Poitou-Charente region. It is located to the north of Oleron and Aix islands. It is connected by a bridge to La Rochelle. Its territory is divided between ten municipalities. The island is formed by the union of three islets, Ars at the west, Loix at the north and Re at the east, which explains its peculiar shape. Very steep, it has seventy kilometers (forty-four miles) of coastline. By road, thirty-one kilometers (nineteen miles) separate Baleines lighthouse (Whales lighthouse) from the bridge. Re, the white islandWhite is the colour of island of Re, both for its salt marshes and for the colour of its houses. These have traditionally blue or green shutters. The hollyhocks are another distinctive character of the island.
Salt marshes occupy a fifth of the surface of the island. They are found mainly in the west while the east is a land of culture. Holiday activities on island of ReThere are numerous leisure activities. A network of bicycle paths allows for family outings. Boat trips are possible on boats of all sizes. Practicing water sports is particularly easy. It is also possible to play tennis and golf and to practice horse riding on Re island. Interesting tourist visits can be made, such as Baleines lighthouse, museums introducing the history of the island and its traditions, or salt farms. Hotel and camping on Re islandThe visitor of the island of Re has a choice between hotels, aparthotels or camping sites. It is also possible to rent a house during the summer season. Some owners rent out at any time of the year. |
