Lighthouse of the Whales

The Lighthouse of the Whales ("Phare des Baleines") is in use since 1854, replacing the pre-existent tower. The lighthouse is 57 meters (187 ft) high. It is visible from a 50 km (31 miles) distance.

The panorama is exceptional since its platform accessible by climbing 257 steps.

An exhibition shows the alternatives conceived for over a century to link the island to the mainland.

Tower of the Whales

The Tower of the Whales ("Tour des Baleines") is 27 meters (89 ft) high. It was in use from 1682 till the inauguration of the lighthouse.

The operation of lighthouses is explained in an exhibition. Objects are presented, as well as videos hosted by Jamy Gourmaud.

The Lock of the Skunk

Fish locks are used in a traditional fishing method. The Lock of the Skunk ("Moufette"), located near the Lighthouse of the Whales, is perfectly seen from its platform.

A stone wall forming a semicircle or half-ellipse is constructed so that it is submerged at high tide. When the tide falls, water flows through grids, thus retaining the fish captured.

The locks being fragile, it is forbidden to approach them. They are presented by the Magayant House ("Maison du Magayant").

The Chaumes pyramid

The Chaumes pyramid is contemporary to the Lighthouse of the Whales. It is located between it and the beach called "Conche des Baleines".
