Fort of La Pree

To the east of La Flotte-en-Ré, the fort of La Pree was built in the early seventeenth century at the request of Louis XIII.

Thanks to it, the royal armies could repel the troops of the Duke of Buckingham who wanted to seize the island of Ré.

More recently, during the Second World War, the fort was used by the German armies to defend La Rochelle.

The Fort of La Pree is being restored gradually. It is open to the public and can be explored independently or as part of a tour.

Saint-Martin's Church

There's no vestige remaining from the first church of Saint-Martin-de-Ré dating from the eleventh century. The current church of Saint-Martin dates from the fourteenth century, but, partially destroyed by successive conflicts, it was rebuilt in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.

From the terrace of the tower, there is an interesting view on Saint-Martin-de-Ré and its fortifications, and on the surrounding landscape.

Tide Mill

The Tide Mill of Loix was built during the seventeenth century. The movements of the tide spin a wheel that drives the mechanism to grind flour.

In the nineteenth century, the mill was used for washing salt. The mill is not open to the public but it is possible to walk around it. The Tide Mill is bordered by the bike path.
